JB Architectural Ironmongery - The Wholesalers To The Trade

New two-part British Standard for Accessibility published

It has been announced that the British Standard on accessibility BS 8300: 2009 has been withdrawn and replaced with two new standards.

This update splits the standard practice document into two – one concerning the internal built environment, and the other the external environment.

According to the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers, the new standards included in these two documents will have “minimal impact on the Ironmongery industry as the main issues which relate to our industry, have been unaffected by the revisions.”

BS 8300-1:2018

Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. External environment. Code of practice

The recommendations here apply largely to new developments, but can also be used for assessing the accessibility and usability of the existing external environment and, where practicable, as a basis for its improvement.

BS 8300-2:2018

Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. Buildings. Code of practice

The majority of the previous standard has moved across to 8300-2:2018.

This standard replaces BS 8300:2009. The numbering follows the logic of the original BS 8300, starting outside the building and working in.
